They are lawmakers, our nation's top political leaders, elected officials of the United States democratic system. From 1995-2007, Gil Gutknecht sat on Capitol Hill, a member of the United States House of Representatives who also has a strong Christian. His beliefs superseded his love for power.
“I don’t think I could have lasted for very long without a strong relationship with Christ. It’s a difficult business. It’s a very rough sport,” said former Congressman Gutknecht. “Sometimes our worldly definition of success is not His definition and it’s when you’re serving that you make a real difference in people’s lives,” explained Gil.
With a deep admiration for Mother Teresa, Gil Gutknecht relates, on a small scale, his purpose during his time in office to what her very purpose was in life.
“I just remember her telling a reporter one time that she was not called to succeed. She was called to serve and that’s how I looked at my time in office,” Gutknecht recalls.
And for 12 years, he served God and country just as so many before him.
