She lives her life in darkness, but Helen Jacobson has a beautiful light shining within. Blind at birth, she is an extraordinary woman who sees more than those who have sight.
“My conversation is for those who I see, those that I see… is that they can see Christ through me,” Helen said. “How do you do that?” I asked. “By playing the piano, by singing,” she replied.
Helen was born without eyes, but it is by that which she does not see that makes her a vision in the eyes of God that is because Helen walks by faith, not by sight.
“I would maybe be mad at God if I would have seen and lost my site when I was older. But the Lord has been good to me and He has provided for me. I can’t be mad at God. He is my best friend. He is the Lord. And, He is the son of God and He took away my sins.”
She lives a simple but busy life.
“I’m a blood donor, I volunteer, I sing with the Lamplighters in Wanamingo, I’m not home.”
Married to her husband of 32 years Helen is now a widow and knows about love and loss. Her grown stepson is now her main family. She has needs as anyone at her age might. However, God provides and speaks directly to her heart.
One example she mentioned was that Carefest volunteers came to her home to do some needed repairs for free. Helen says, “I didn’t even think about it. I didn’t even ask and here they came. I didn’t ask’”. She goes on to explain what God speaks to her heart when she prays, “Helen, I will help you. Helen, don’t be afraid. Helen, I’m here don’t worry, I’m here.”
God even has a sense of humor when He speaks to her.
“I have had dreams that He just spoke to me and said, ‘Hey, fear not. Go! Do! Don’t be such a chicken’”.
Her adventurous side is evident; she travels and hops on all-terrain vehicles for fun. However, it is her faith and love for Jesus Christ that makes her who she is and will ultimately lead her to an eternity of seeing more beauty than she can even imagine.
“One day I will see and I’m going to look and look and look. I’ll see what my husband looked like; I’ll get to see my parents, my sister. I’ll get to see a lot of people. And nobody is going to push me away. I’m going to look and look and look,” Helen concluded with excitement.
