Do you know how often you're supposed to replace windows in your home?

It's something you don't think much about until your kid breaks one during a backyard game of baseball. But even if your windows look they're in one piece, they still could be broken.

Making sure your windows are working to their full potential is important for any home. If they aren't, your money, safety, and comfort are being compromised.

How can you tell whether it's time to replace the house windows if they don't look broken? Read on for a handy guide.

Your Energy Bill Increased

As seasons change, your energy bill will naturally fluctuate. However, if your windows are damaged, your bill can increase more than it needs to. In fact, windows are responsible for 25-30% of your home's energy use.

Windows are meant to insulate your home from the outside temperatures. When heat or cold air escapes through the windows, your HVAC system has to work overtime to compensate for that.

If your energy bill has been rising in comparison to years past, it might be time to replace your windows.

Street Noise is Becoming Disruptive

Just as window insulation is meant to keep out heat and cold, it also filters out noise. Most residential windows won't block all the noise from the street unless they're double paned.

But there should be a big difference between the sound levels when it's open compared to closed. If there is none, the insulation has likely broken down. Find out more about that here.

They're Hard to Open or Close

Windows that don't open and close easily are annoying. They're also dangerous.

You want to know that your windows can open without difficulty during an emergency. Windows should also close tightly and have a functioning lock to keep out potential intruders.

If you're only having trouble with one window, it might just mean that the pane needs fixing. However, if several windows are sticking, it probably means they're too old.

The Windows are Old

Even if your windows look fine, if they're between 15-25 years old, it's about time to replace them.

Your windows stand between you and the elements outdoors. After that much time, they've been through a lot of wear and tear. Even the best windows will begin to deteriorate.

Another reason to replace old windows? Over the two decades since you've last had windows installed, there have been advancements in how they're made. New windows are a lot more energy efficient than they used to be.

Is it Time to Replace the House Windows?

If you recognize these signs, then it's time to replace the house windows. It isn't cheap, but it's a necessary investment in your home.
