How to Become an Actor or Actress in the Christian Film Industry

Do you love the Lord and want to glorify Him with the talents He’s given you? If so and your passions lie in film, you may want to consider getting started in faith-based films.

If you’re ready to use your talent to celebrate your Lord and Savior, read on. We’ll show you how to get started. Read on to learn more about how you can make your mark and glorify God in the Christian film industry.

Look for the Opportunities God Gives You

Want to meet some of the movers and shakers in the Christian film industry? It might be time for a road trip. National Christian conferences can be a great opportunity for you to connect with other creative Christians.

Growing your creative Christian network can help you better open yourself to the path God creates for you. Ask for help and share why you believe God has called you to become an actor or actress.

Start Small and Stay Humble

If you believe that God has called to become an actor or actress, don’t wait for someone to pluck you from the crowd and throw you into a starring role in a Christian movie. You’ll need to start small first.

Acting in local theater, taking acting classes, or getting a commercial agent can be a great start. You’ll want to ensure that you aren’t spending any money on representation. Agents that charge to put you on their roster, are likely a scam.

Instead, set aside a couple of hundred dollars and get a professional headshot taken. Once you get the photos back from retouching, you’ll need to print a small batch. These photos can be sent out along with a resume and (short) cover letter to prospective agents and managers.

This is the first step in your journey. If you aren’t lucky enough to live near a major city, that’s ok too. Search the internet for a theatrical or commercial agency based in an area that’s within driving distance. If they express interest in representing you, it may be worth making the drive in to meet with them.

If all goes according to plan and they agree to represent you, you’ll likely need to prepare to drop everything and drive back whenever you have an audition. In some cases, however, casting agents may be willing to accept self-tapes.

Self-tapes involve reading your sides on camera with a partner. Your partner will be off screen and doesn't need to have acting experience. When reading side, you may choose to act out the directions described in the

If At First You Don’t Succeed in the Christian Film Industry

If you’re having difficulty getting started, it may be time to reexamine your approach. Check out this guide for beginners, and let this poem renew your strength:

“After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,

especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."

If you aren’t experiencing the initial success you were hoping for, don’t let that stop you. God may be leading you toward a better approach.

Creating your own filmmaking projects has become easier than ever thanks to advances in technology. Because tech is more widely available than ever, making a name for yourself in faith-based industries can be easier than ever.

Creating an Independent Faith-Based Project of Your Own

Creating your own independent projects can help you create the momentum you need to begin your career. Browse YouTube for the help with the skills you need. Better yet, share your project with members of your church. Do the musicians from your worship want to create the score for your short? Is there an undiscovered master director in your congregation?

Allowing others to participate doesn’t just boost the value of your independent project, it can be a great way to help bring your peers closer to God.

Count On Your Brothers in Christ

If you’re looking to find the path God has laid out for you, don’t look past your brothers in faith. If you set out to glorify the Lord through your own independent projects, you find many unique opportunities to grow your craft.

Through hard work, patience, and faith, your work will help you show other like-minded creatives just what you're capable of
