The Battle Over Jerusalem

The Battle Over Jerusalem in End-Time Prophecy  © excerpt from Christine Darg's book, "Watchmen, Arise!"

“Ye who make mention of the LORD, keep not silent, and give him no rest until he establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. . . .” (Isaiah 62: 2)

“Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.”  (Zechariah 8:2-8 KJV)

God favors the return of the Jews to the Holy Land.  In his Olivet Discourse Jesus said in Luke 21: 24 concerning Israel’s dispersion to the ends of the earth that the Jews would return to recapture Jerusalem at the end of the Times of the Gentiles. And when the Jews resettle in their own land, the last battle over Jerusalem will begin.  It’s an ongoing battle, and the prophet Zechariah prophesied that all the nations that fight against Jerusalem and who try to move and divide Jerusalem will be CRUSHED!

End-time watchmen must be committed to the Battle over Jerusalem and to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.  Concerning the “Battle for Britain” in World War 2 which was won by brave fighter pilots, Sir Winston Churchill said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” I believe Churchill’s statement could equally apply to the work of Jerusalem's intercessory watchmen: "Never in the field of human conflict will so much be owed by so many to so few."  The God of Israel still recruits a remnant “Gideon’s Army” who can turn End-Time battles.  Are you willing to be part of the Battle for Jerusalem in prayer?

There’s a growing phenomenon in the Church that is galvanizing the Judeo-Christian world.  Like Ruth the Moabite in the Old Testament, many former Gentile believers are emerging from the famine years in the Church and are ridding ourselves of pagan customs.  We’re rediscovering the family tree of Israel into which we, like Ruth, have been adopted and grafted.  And like Biblical Ruth, we’re making bold declarations that will surely be tested in days to come:  “Israel, Your people will be my people and your God my God. . . May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”

We worship the God of Israel, not the god of Islam.  There is no god but “Abba” and Yeshua is his Son.  The Jews are still anticipating the first coming of the Messiah; we are watching for His Second Coming.  Furthermore, "The days are coming, and now are," Zechariah 8:23 declares, "when ten men out of all of the nations of the world will take hold of the garment of him that is a Jew and say, 'We will go with you for we have heard that God is with you!'”

Meanwhile, there’s no other city like Jerusalem whose history has been written in advance in the Bible!  Truly Jerusalem is the hinge upon which the destiny of the world hangs.  And Jerusalem will be the balance in which the Almighty weighs the nations.  The Bible says, All who come against Jerusalem shall be destroyed.

It’s as if God has suspended a gigantic sign on his holy city:  "Don’t touch!  No trespassing! " I pity the politicians who disregard this!

Let's uncover some facts that are not being focused upon in the news.

First of all, Jerusalem is central to the history of the Jews more than any other people group on earth. Jerusalem has a unique place in the history of Israel, a place not shared by any other nation in the world. Psalm 137 declares, “if I forget you Jerusalem, let my right hand wither, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.” The Muslims must prefer Mecca in their religion, but the Jews pray toward Jerusalem, and they yearned to re-establish their capital for 2,000 years. It was in Jerusalem that God commanded David to purchase ground that was destined to be the site of the Temple:   “ . . . the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.”  ‘So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.  And David built an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Later, David’s son King Solomon built his temple on this site and God said in 1 Kings 9: 3 to him:  “ . . . My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.”

Secondly, in no other religion is pilgrimage to Jerusalem commanded. Muslims make a pilgrimage once in their lifetime to Mecca. But the Jewish people are, in fact, commanded by Scripture:  “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which he chooses:  at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles. . .”  (Deuteronomy 16: 16).

Additionally, here are some other important Jerusalem facts:

The name “Jerusalem” occurs 778 times in the sacred scriptures of the Jewish people.  By contrast, in the Koran, the book sacred to Islam, Jerusalem is not mentioned once.

Historically, Jerusalem has been the only capital of the Jewish people, both political and spiritual.  Jerusalem has never been the capital of any other nation.  As a city, it only became politically important to Islam after the Six Day War, June 1967.  Previously, under the Jordanian occupation, Jerusalem never had the status of a capital.  When usurpers from other nations sought to share Jerusalem, Nehemiah the Jewish Governor, declared in Nehemiah 2:20 :  “... you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem.”

It is extremely important to realize prophetically that the restoration of Israel is a prelude to the Second Coming:   “For [when] the LORD shall build up Zion; He shall appear in His glory” (Psalm 102:16).

The salvation of the world is tied to the destiny of Israel, Jerusalem and the Jews.  According to Jesus in John 4:22 “salvation proceeds from the Jews.”  When the Jewish people are regathered in their historic national homeland, they will, as a result of their traumas, summon Jesus by crying, “Baruch Haba B’Shem Adonai--Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the LORD.”  Yeshua foretold this great event when He said to Jerusalem, “You’ll not see me henceforth, til you say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”

In the meantime, Satan will do his utmost to prevent the Second Coming by attempting yet again to obliterate the Jewish nation, to demonize them and to sour world sentiment against the Jews to the point that national leaders will espouse, as did former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard, that Israel is illegal—an “historic mistake.”

However, far from being a mistake, Israel is currently being restored by God according to his timetable. God has spoken that he continually watches the Temple Mount.  He has determined that Jerusalem shall become the worship capital of the world when Messiah returns in great glory to reign for a thousand years.  Many of the Old Testament prophecies speak of David coming to reign; however, rabbinic scholars explain that David is a title in Bible prophecies synonymous with Messiah.

Jerusalem is intended to become a praise in the earth, not a political hot potato.  This troublesome city whose name means peace is a “stone of offense” to politicians, but is destined to become the capital of renown, known resplendently in Hebrew as “Yehovah Shammah— “the LORD is There!”

Since the beginning of their worldwide dispersal, the history and future destiny of the Jewish people and of Jerusalem could very well be summarized in the one very expansive Bible verse, Jeremiah 31: 28: “It shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant, said the LORD.”

Zephaniah 3:20 “Behold I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before you eyes, saith the Lord.”

Within the Holy City now and simultaneously all over the world God has “set”  (in Hebrew—“numbered”) specific watchman, according to Isaiah 62:6, who carry the prayer burden of the Lord concerning His eternal purposes for Jerusalem.  The watchmen cry night and day for the Lord’s peace to descend upon Jerusalem:

You who make mention of the Lord—in other words, you who claim to know the Lord and who “drop his name”— don’t keep silent until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in this earth! Jerusalem will become the head and not the tail.

Realizing Jerusalem's special place of honor in the heart of the Father and the Son, no believer may disregard  Jerusalem or speak of  its destiny as if Jerusalem is not of the utmost importance.  Let’s look at the Scriptural pre-eminence and importance of Jerusalem:

The Torah prophesied in Deuteronomy 12:11, “The Lord your God shall choose a place to cause his name to dwell there.” And the LORD chose Jerusalem (not Beijing, Delhi, Babylon, Mecca,  Brussels, London, Washington) as the city where he placed His name. Over and over in his Word, God declared Jerusalem to be his chosen city:  2 Chronicles 6: 6 ‘Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there . . ..”

Jerusalem is the center of the earth and will be the center of the Millennium Kingdom.

Isaiah 2:3  “Out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

Jerusalem is also uniquely Yeshua’s City. In fact, Jesus called Jerusalem the “City of the Great King.” Because Jerusalem is the LORD’s city, He forbade his followers to swear by it in Matthew 5:35. If Jerusalem is sacred to Messiah, it should be sacred to us.

Jerusalem is an earthly shadow of eternal realities.  If you are a redeemed child of God, in your heart will be the highways to Zion; your connection to Jerusalem will be inevitable and you will be a lover of Jerusalem:

Jerusalem is the very throne of Yehovah. Jeremiah 3:17 “At that time, they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord.”

Due in a large measure to distorted reports in the news media against Israel and the Jews, many Christians in the institutional churches, and increasingly the nations, have hardened their hearts toward Israel and God’s eternal purposes for Jerusalem.  When somebody continues to resist God’s revealed and prophetic Word concerning Jerusalem and Israel, his heart becomes hardened, like Pharaoh’s.  When a person receives revelation from the Holy Spirit, his heart is touched and softens.  Many who were previously indifferent have been touched by the Holy Spirit and have received much revelation concerning Israel and Jeruslaem that has led to a burden in prayer.

Those who have been “set” in the Spirit by God upon the walls of Jerusalem, virtually, or spiritually speaking, will know without a doubt who you are.  However, on the other hand, all believers are commanded in a sense to fulfill the ministry of watchmen for Jerusalem.  This is because there is a Biblical command in Psalm 122 to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.  This is imperative prayer!  Believers are not commanded to pray for the peace of any other city in the same way that we are under orders to pray for Jerusalem.  So truly every born-again believer should see himself as a watchman upon Jerusalem’s ancient walls!

Our prayer meetings within the walls of Jerusalem inside one of the city’s ancient guard towers are momentous because we are eyewitnesses to the fulfillment of Bible prophecies in these Last Days.  Our “Watchmen and Women on the Wall” prayer conferences give believers an opportunity to be literal watchmen upon the walls at least once a year.

There should be a deep and abiding concern for the welfare of Jerusalem and for all of her citizens—Jew and Arab alike-- as we see the signs of our Savior and Redeemer's return.

HOW should we pray specifically concerning Jerusalem?

--Pray for her peace as commanded in Psalm 122. Praying for her peace means hastening the return of the Prince of Peace.

--The watchman of the Lord’s eternal purposes is under a mandate in Scripture to “Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.” (Isaiah 40:2).

--The Biblical watchman must also thoroughly understand, comprehend and decree that Israel’s many enemies will be confounded, so that to side with the political anti-Semites is always a dangerous move.

--Jerusalem’s watchmen must pray against the blight of Replacement Theology to be repented of and banished from the church, not only worldwide, but especially throughout the Middle East.  Replacement Theology says that God is a liar—that he is finished with the Jews and has transferred all of their covenants and promises over to a Gentile-dominated church.  Replacement Theology makes God a liar, because it denies that He will keep covenant with the Jewish people. The Apostle Paul thoroughly refuted this false theology in Romans 11.

We watchmen must never keep silent until the following Biblical points are accepted throughout the church, and especially amongst our Arab brethren in the Church:

--God has never reversed his selection of the Jews as his chosen nation to be the repository of His Word, covenants and promises.

--Although the Jewish people were judicially dispersed after the time of the Lord's First Advent, God will, as he promised, continue to re-instate the Jews and bring them back to their own land before the Second Advent of Messiah. All of Israel’s enemies will be confounded and destroyed as God is faithful to his covenants with restored Israel.

--Israel will become the head of the nations under a restored Kingdom with the Son of David reigning from Jerusalem and the nations will be commanded to make pilgrimmage to Jerusalem to worship the King. (Zechariah 14)

--The judicial spiritual blindness upon Israel and Jerusalem be removed:  “Blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in; and so all Israel shall be saved; as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness form Jacob; as touching the election, they are beloved for the father’s sake; for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.  If the fall of them be the riches of the world and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles, how much more their fullness?  If the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be but life from the dead?”  (Romans 11)

--The spirit of grace and supplication will fall in Jerusalem as foretold in Zechariah 12-13.

Jerusalem’s watchmen must thoroughly understand that this is also the time for the Islamic Harvest.  It is not enough just to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and the salvation of the Jews. If we pray only for Israel, we are praying for only part of the picture.  God has determined that Israel in the Millennium will be the third in a Messianic League, as the Amplified Bible describes Isaiah 19:25, along with Egypt and Assyria (Iraq), whom the LORD will bless saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria the work of my hands and Israel mine inheritance.”  (See my book, "Let Ishmael Live!" for an explanation of the bigger picture.)

In the midst of carnage, suicide bombings and chaos rather than peace, we must proclaim God’s pending Revival in the Middle East.  The well of salvation will soon be rediscovered as we stand in the gap as watchman maintaining the cause of the Lord.  Isaiah envisioned the inevitable Revival in Israel in Chapter 12: 3, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.”  And the prophet Zechariah also foresaw in Chapter 13:1, “On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.”

We must understand the power of prophecy and its creative force.  God commanded Ezekiel to prophesy to the dry bones of the house of Israel.  He obeyed because he had the revelation that when God commands and when God ordains a thing, it is accomplished by the spoken word.  Therefore we must prophesy to that fountain in the Name of Yeshua to re-open and to spring up mightily in Jerusalem!  The time of judgment is passing; Israel has paid double for her sins; the judicial partial blindness that has befallen Israel will soon lift for “the set time to favour her has come.”  (Psalm 102: 13).

Figuratively, Hagar’s well (Genesis 21: 19) whereby Ishmael, the patriarch of the Arabs, was saved from death in the desert, will also be unstopped. We must prophesy to the well of salvation so that the Arabs can drink freely of the water of life provided by the Savior.

The prophet Isaiah depicted the rebirth of the State of Israel as a unique phenomenon:  “Before she was in labor, she gave birth; Before her pain came, She delivered a male child.  Who has heard such a thing?  Who has seen such things?  Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day?  Or shall a nation be born at once?  For as soon as Zion was in labor, She gave birth to her children.”  (Isaiah 66: 7-8).

The rebirth of the State of Israel is correctly presented in Scripture as a unique event without historical parallel.  On one day in May 1948, Israel emerged as a complete nation with an army, navy, air force (although they had only one airplane!), a government, and a revived ancient  language.  There is no other nation in history that has made such a complete comeback!

In conclusion, I believe Jerusalem is the litmus test by which God will deal with the nations.  Those nations who align themselves with God’s purposes for Jerusalem will receive His blessing.  But those nations who meddle with God’s purposes concerning his Jerusalem will be severely judged.  This is according to the very clear words of Zechariah 12:1-9:

The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel . . .. Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it . . ..
