May 22, 2019

     (0 Rating)

Did you know that the average fuel economy rating for all new vehicles has reached a record high of 24.9 mpg?

Cars in the U.S. are now more fuel efficient than ever, making it the best time to get rid of your guzzler. Fortunately, buyers have a myriad of options this year. With hybrids and EVs having gained a lot of popularity and becoming cheaper, it’s sensible to invest in a car aided by electric motors.

So, which are the most fuel efficient cars?

Check out our top 11.

1. Honda Fit

The Honda Fit is a practical, fun, and fuel-efficient car. It’s packed with useful tech features, it’s lively to drive, and has more space than its tiny footprint suggests.

The CVT automatic transmission Fit model has an average EPA rating of 36 mpg – 40 mpg highway and 33 mpg city. For the six-speed manual model, the ratings are slightly lower.

2. Chevrolet Colorado Duramax

This is one of the best fuel efficient cars in the truck category. If anything, the current-generation Chevrolet Colorado is a ground-breaking pickup truck as it’s one of the first vehicles to utilize the four-cylinder General Motors 2.8 liter diesel engine.

The new Colorado rear-while drive has a 23mpg combined rating (30 mpg highway, 20 mpg city), while the four-wheel drive’s rating is 22 mpg combined (28 mpg highway, 19 mpg city).

Even better, this is a truck that can tow about 7700 pounds and boasts 369 pound-feet of torque.

3. Audi A4

The Audi A4 is a classy, comfortable, and frugal car.

Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the A4 returns 30 mpg, a combined cycle of 34 mpg highway and 27 mpg in the city. This tech-savvy small sedan also comes with Andriod Auto, Apple CarPlay, and the Virtual Cockpit in Audi-speak.

To top that, it makes 236 pound-feet of torque and 188 horsepower.

4. FIAT 124 Spider

The FIAT 124 Spider borrowed the basic platform of the Mazda MX-5 Miata and added some Italian flair to it. The result is a sportier modern day version of the original 124 Spider, with a retro bodywork that makes it extra charming. On top of that, FIAT fitted their new model with a four-cylinder 1.4-liter turbo engine.

What’s more, this car’s six-speed manual transmission model has an EPA rating of 30 mpg, while the optional six-speed auto gets a rating of 29 mpg.

5. Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 is one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the SUV/crossover category.

It’s part of the new breed of subcompact crossovers that combine a small hatchback’s footprint with the tall, relatively boxy body of a traditional SUV. Nonetheless, this Mazda is still a small car when you consider its fuel consumption.

It’s EPA-rated at 29 mpg with all-wheel drive and 31 mpg with front-wheel drive. All the fuel goes into a peppy four-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel engine. Additionally, the CX-3 comes with a well-crafted interior characterized with unique pin styles.

6. Hyundai Ioniq

This car is the cream in the EV category. It’s fully electric and comes with an Electric Drive engine that produces zero carbon emissions. On top of that, the Hyundai Ioniq has a combined mpg of 136 (122 mpg on the highway and 150 in the city).

When it comes to the interiors, Hyundai has done a great job in the ergonomics and quality. The upper materials are not only soft to touch, but also durable for top-notch drivability.

With that said, the Mitsubishi Mirage is inexpensive to run throughout the year.

8. Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Sedan

Though North America’s Diesel Cruze is dying, Chevy is still selling it in other American markets. The four-door option comes with a four-cylinder 1.6-liter diesel engine, producing 137 horsepower.

Unsurprisingly, this engine consumes relatively well, with its EPA rating standing at 48 mpg on the highway, 31 mpg in the city, and a combined mpg of 37.

9. Hyundai Elantra Eco

Hyundai’s Elantra lineup consists of top-of-the-range cars in terms of efficiency. Even so, the Elantra Eco bags the highest marks when compared to its siblings. This car returns 40 mpg on the highway, 32 mpg in the city, and a combined mpg of 35.

The yearly costs of fueling the Elantra Eco is quite affordable.

10. KIA Forte FE
