Below you will find our definitive guide of the most effective Fortnite tips and tricks – whether you are looking for an exhaustive list of all the Fortnite weapons and items you should be looking out for, or the locations in which you should drop for the best loot, just jump to the section you need below:

Fortnite Battle Royale A guide to get the win

#Know how to start

At the start of each round, pick out a promising spot from the bus - structures mean loot is more likely, but isolation will give you a bit of breathing space while you get set up on the ground.

Prepare to be adaptable during this landing phase by keeping an eye on where the other players are skydiving to, and if you find them heading to your chosen location on the way down then break away, as it's going to get really messy upon landing otherwise.

Your order of priorities upon landing should be as follows: Get out of the open. Get a weapon. Get collecting building resources.

#Use Headphones

To turn the tables on your enemies you can invest in a decent pair of cans yourself. The game is free, so you have saved some cash to put towards some, really.

Since knowing where other players are is half the battle (royale), wearing headphones can be the difference between life and death – even if you are lacking in loot.

Keep your own noise to a minimum and, when you hear another sound, be on the alert

#Get Gear fast

Fortnite is notably faster-paced than PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, with matches starting quicker and ending even faster. That means you’ll need to think on your feet with regards to uncovering gear and preparing for a sudden fight. The second you land, look for the nearest structure in search of loot.

Don’t parachute into an open field. Not only does it leave you vulnerable, it also means you’ll waste precious time sprinting to a building that may already have been looted. Find somewhere, get looting – and please ensure you close the door behind you.

Try to pick a structure with two or more walls surrounding it, since enemies will have a smaller chance of getting the drop on you. In Fortnite, without a shield for protection, you’ll be dead after only a couple of shots; every bit of damage counts.

#Build for defence

Learn the ‘instant combat tower’ structure, and map it to your muscle memory as quickly as possible. Four walls, a staircase in the middle, move up and repeat, to build a simple, effective, elevated fort that you can duck in and out of at will.

Learn to treat building as part of your weapon and gear set - you can build on the fly and climb stairs the instant their construction outline appears, so make them a dynamic part of your game.Getting sniped while out in the open? Throw walls down between you and your attacker, to buy yourself time as you run for cover.

#Do Not Loot Bodies Straight Away

If you get a kill, it is hard not to zip over to your unfortunate victim’s corpse and loot the shower of items that have erupted from their body. Resist this temptation.

Firefights attract lots of attention; you cannot guarantee that your murderous mano-a-mano has not piqued the attention of nearby players. You are at your most vulnerable when looting; you are presenting your opponent with an easy, static target to easily blow away. Resist the urge to immediately loot. Wait for others to take the juicy bait.

Also, when looting, build around yourself while you swap out gear. This is even more important while healing or using shield potions: you never know who was watching your fight through a scope and just waiting to land an easy headshot

#Be aware of your surroundings

Death can come at any moment in Battle Royale. Players can ambush one another in seconds, whether it’s a sniper across a field or a sneaky camper hiding in a basement. Never let your guard down, and keep your eyes and ears open for any perceivable threat.

The majority of environments are destructible, meaning enemies are capable of bashing down walls and giving even the greatest of hiding spots a window of vulnerability. Knowing this, try not to stay in the same place too long – and keep the competition guessing.

Of course, it’s impossible to camp your way through an entire match; the oncoming storm is constantly pushing players closer together into an inevitable slaughter. Keep on top of the storm and try to remain within it. You can always pick people off from a hiding place at the border, too.

#Use height to your advantage

Being higher than other players will 9 times out of 10 give you an advantage, so camp at the top of buildings, head up hills and build vertically - just make sure you have some cover up there.

Be aware of your silhouette, as elevation is great for intermittent scans of the immediate area - and you should do this to keep apprised of all potential threats - but being framed against the skyline also makes you a lot more visible as you'll be susceptible to long range attacks.

#Drink Shield Potions Immediately(Most Of The Time)

If you get this little pot of blue goodness make sure you snaffle it up, immediately. It will make a big difference to your Fortnite gameplay. The 50% shield buff lasts for the duration of the match, but, since it is a shield buff, it will not protect you from certain damage types, like falling. What’s more, you can stack two, doubling your starting max health and giving you a serious advantage.

If you land in an area with other players it is usually best to glug those potions straight away. However if you are alone try finding less potent shields before downing your regular shield potions. That way you can get that sweet, sweet 200HP.
